Study Permit

A study permit is a legal document that authorizes an international student to study in Canada for a limited time. Barring certain exceptions, most international students need this document to study. A Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) might also be required to enter Canada based on your country of residence or citizenship.

Study permit is a document we issue that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada.

  • Collect all the required documents (A Letter of explanation stating your purpose of studying in Canada, valid passport, proof of funds (GIC, tuition fee paid, bank statements), letter of acceptance.

  • Ensure to have the right document checklist for the right kind of permit application.

  • Create the IRCC account

  • Fill the required forms and attach all the required documents (language test, medical exams, police certificate. Bank statements, SOP)

  • Pay the required fee (application fee and biometrics)

  • Once the study permit is approved, you will be sent a passport request. Submit your passport to the closest VAC in your area along with the other documents asked in that specified email.

Note: Your study permit is not a visa. The study permit is a document we issue that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. Most foreign nationals need a study permit to study in Canada. Make sure you have all the documents you need before you apply. You should apply before you travel to Canada. Your study permit is not a visa If the application for the study permit has been submitted from outside Canada, you will automatically get the visa stamped for the first time as well. 


 

Study Permit Extension:

Generally, the study permit will be stamped for an addition of 90 days to the duration of course. In certain scenarios, where you need more time to complete your education than what is stamped, you would be required to submit an application for the study permit extension. The usual processing time for this process is 1-2 months, which sometimes varies as per the Immigration Policies and Procedures.

Things you need to apply for the Study Permit Extension:

✔ Current Study Permit

✔ Proof that you have paid the fee for the remainder of the Course

✔ Copy of your passport

✔ Bank statement

✔ Letter of acceptance from the other college (in the situation where you are changing your college/university or if you are changing your course).
